Description
Marcel Breuer’s work often fused modernist clarity with architectural precision - very much along the Bauhaus principles. . This large “Canaan” desk, produced by Gavina in the 1960s, is a strong example of that balance—designed with both utility and proportion in mind.
The name “Canaan” is believed to have been chosen by Dino Gavina, the Italian design visionary who produced Breuer's furniture in the post-war period.
Design
The piece measures 180 cm in length, offering a generous workspace. Its structure is defined by two suspended volumes, each housing storage on either side of the seated position. On the left, a combination of drawers and a larger compartment creates practical functionality. On the right, three drawers are stacked in a clean vertical rhythm. The wood veneer reveals a subtle, linear grain, while the squared form and open leg space create a visual lightness. The crossbars provide both stability and architectural balance. Every element reflects Breuer’s approach to designing furniture that feels integrated and disciplined.
Condition
The desk has been fully restored. Veneer surfaces are clean and uniform, and all drawers function smoothly. Only minimal signs of age remain, consistent with careful restoration. -
