Description
Grey Pottery horse, Tang Dynasty (518-906 A.D.) earthenware. Sold with a digital copy of a lab report confirming the date, issued by the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art at Oxford University. Provenance: E & J Frankel Ltd. Oriental Art, New York. Private Collection. Horses were animals of great prestige during the Tang Dynasty, regarded as crucial to the military might of the empire. As stated in the Xintangshu ( New History of the Tang), " Horses are the military preparedness of the state; if heaven takes this preparedness away, the state will toter to a fall."
