Description
Large and bold, this Art Deco ceramic platter featuring a mermaid trumpeting a shell and embracing a dolphin while another dolphin and starfish are cavorting in the water nearby, was made Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep red color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light red and white underneath. Roger Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass pieces before he left to form his own studio. He worked in Aubagne, an important ceramic center and produced an array of remarkable Art Deco pieces. This piece is signed by the artist along the edge.
