Description
Highly atmospheric and richly colored, this 1929 vintage landscape by a Swedish painter depicts layers of history and tradition, from the man in traditional Arab garb plowing the fields with his ox in the foreground, to broken Roman columns in mid-range, to an arched structure and a seascape in the background, all painted with a modern sensibility redolent of the Art Deco era. The painter was Ewald Dahlskog, who was famous in several media, including intarsia (inlaid wood patterns), glass, ceramics and murals, including "The Sower" painted on one of the ceilings of Stockholm's famous City Hall, a bank in Paris, and interiors for a cruise ship commissioned by Swedish America Line. Dahlskog also traveled the world, and here he shows an ability to capture the color, heat and mood of an ancient settlement amidst a striking landscape along the Mediterranean.
