Description
This rare floor lamp, designed by Mado Jolain in 1956, tells the story of a pivotal moment in the artist’s life. That year, she founded the I/D publishing house with her husband, René Legrand. Together, they decided to open a new chapter, beyond ceramics, their favourite field. Their ambition: to create a universe apart, made up of unique pieces, both modern and poetic — coffee tables, magazine racks, lighting — so many objects that combine functionality and artistic expression.
Designer: Mado Jolain (1921–2019) is a key figure in post-war French ceramics, whose work embodies the elegance and modernity of the 1950s and 60s. His talent was revealed very early on, notably at the Salon des artistes décorateurs, where his pieces attracted the attention of the Atelier Primavera du Printemps. His creations — both utilitarian and sculptural — quickly seduced the great Parisian galleries, such as La Demeure or the Galerie du Siècle, and caught the eye of renowned decorators such as Merceron or Sarmadiras. Guided by a sensibility close to modernist architecture, she also imagines works intended for the outdoors, subtly playing with solids, voids, light and matter. Rediscovered today, his work stands out as an essential reference in twentieth-century French ceramics.
