$ 93,750
  • Description
    Very large 19th century French cartel clock by Paillard
    French, c. 1870
    Height 140cm, width 59cm, depth 34cm

    This magnificent gilt bronze cartel clock is a superb example of 19th-century French decorative art, uniting the exuberance of Rococo design with exceptional craftsmanship. Designed for wall display, its grand scale and intricate detailing make it a commanding focal point in any interior.

    The shaped case is crowned by a winged cherub holding an hourglass—an allegorical nod to the fleeting nature of time. Framed within an arched surround, the clock face is bordered by scrolling foliate motifs, dramatic caryatids, and architectural flourishes, echoing the opulence of mid-18th-century French design.

    The gilt dial features enamel cartouches with Roman numerals and finely pierced gilt hands. Beneath, a dynamic scene shows Apollo’s chariot bursting forth from a radiant sunburst—an emblem of light, creativity, and classical grandeur. The integrated console bracket below is adorned with richly scrolling ornament and a stylised mascaron at its base, completing the piece with baroque theatricality.

    The reverse bears the stamp of Victor Paillard (1805–1886), the celebrated Parisian bronzier known for producing luxurious, finely cast works for an elite European clientele. Paillard’s creations, often inspired by 18th-century models, are noted for their detail, artistry, and quality of gilding.

    With its intricate symbolism and exceptional decorative presence, this clock would make an outstanding centrepiece in any refined interior or curated collection of French decorative arts.
