Description
Large antique Italian figurative Orientalist oil painting by Pietro Gabrini
Italian, 1901
Canvas: Height 58cm, width 86cm
Frame: Height 74cm, width 101cm, depth 4cm
This striking oil painting, created by renowned Italian artist Pietro Gabrini, showcases his talent for romantic figural scenes. Best known for his landscapes, still lifes, and portraiture, Gabrini trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti, where he honed the refined technique and classical elegance evident in this composition.
Dating to 1901 and signed by the artist, the scene captures an atmospheric Orientalist setting with rich visual detail. At its centre lies a reclining odalisque, a woman traditionally associated with a Middle Eastern harem. Draped in soft, voluminous blue fabric and a translucent upper cloth, she radiates serene beauty. Her flowing brown hair is crowned with an ornate beaded headdress, and fine gold bracelets glisten on her fair skin. One arm is gently raised, holding a fan in a gesture of calm relaxation.
Standing nearby is a male figure dressed in dark tones - musician, serenading the woman with a focused, admiring gaze. His placement and deeper colours create a visual contrast against the lighter pastel hues of the background, drawing attention to their interaction.
The room is richly decorated with elements inspired by Middle Eastern aesthetics. An octagonal wooden table, filled with assorted objects, sits near a delicately rendered incense burner, from which ethereal smoke curls into the air. The tiled floor is partly covered by an intricate Persian rug, while a colourful parrot sits perched on a tall stand, observing the scene.
To the right of the composition, Gabrini introduces large, boldly coloured plants, whose deep green tones enhance the visual depth and echo the geometric tiles beneath them. These details, combined with the warm, softly lit interior, lend the scene an idealised, romantic tone.
Set in an elegant giltwood frame, the painting bears the artist’s signature in the lower left corner ‘P. Gabrini Roma 1901’.
With its delicate composition, fine brushwork, and evocative subject, this painting is a highly decorative piece.
