Pair of French Neoclassical oil paintings by Dubost
French, 1809/11
Frame: Height 70.5cm, width 86cm, depth 9cm
Panel: Height 45cm, width 61cm, depth 1cm
The charming paintings in this pair are by Antoine Dubost (French, 1769-1825) and are painted in the Baroque style. The paintings depict, in a manner reminiscent of Rubens, two young boys in settings with dogs. One composition portrays a muscular boy lying on a white sheet, with a sleeping baby in the background and a dog seated on its haunches by his side. The other composition depicts a young boy hugging the neck of a dog, while feeding it something with his other hand. The painterly manner is smooth and accomplished, and the colour palette is rich and sombre, with dark shadows and raking light predominating.
One is signed 'A DUBOST FECIT, LONDON, 1811', and there is an inscription on the dog's collar which reads 'CATALANI'. The other is signed 'DUBOST, LONDON, 1809'.
