Description
Hans-Agne Jakobsson, a renowned Swedish lighting designer, became a pivotal figure in mid-20th-century Scandinavian design. He left his mark on the design world through his work at iconic companies like AB Markaryd, Orno, and his eponymous company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB. His design philosophy was based on merging form and function, a philosophy that would soon permeate the ethos of Swedish mid-century design.
Jakobsson stands out as a designer thanks to his exploration of minimalist aesthetics and innovative lighting solutions. These pursuits are visible when looking at pieces such as this wall lamp. Wall lamps are also known as sconces, a wall-mounted lighting fixture, traditionally used to hold candles or torches. With an elongated lower half and a beautiful cylindrical glass shade, this piece is reminiscent of a torch. As the brass frame holds up the tinted glass, this lamp also clearly shows the Swedish designer’s interest in symmetry, balance and beautiful geometric forms. The simple design of this piece is clean with a straightforwardly modern look. Combining the brass structure and back plate with the translucent cylindrical glass shade, this sconce is brilliant in its simplicity, however, not devoid of ornamentation. The perforated brass plate surrounding the bulb adds a unique touch to the piece. Brass and glass, two timeless materials, dictate the look, creating an elegant and stylish model by marrying creativity and skilled craftsmanship.
While Hans-Agne Jakobsson designed and produced various types of furniture, his lighting received greater international attention, not without good reason. His fixtures, sconces in particular, have never gone out of style, and have been in use for decades to elevate interiors worldwide.
