Description
JOSEF FRANK.
A pair of wall lamps, model 2565, brass, two light arms each. Manufacturer: Firma Svenskt Tenn, Sweden.
Marked Svenskt Tenn.
Josef Frank was an Austrian/Swedish designer.
He emigrated to Sweden in 1933 and was appointed artistic collaborator at Svenskt Tenn. Just a few years later, Josef Frank and Estrid Ericson had their first international breakthrough. Their designs, which they exhibited at the world fairs in Paris in 1937 and in San Francisco and New York in 1939, starkly contradicted the prevailing ideals of the time. Characterized by bold, contrasting materials, colors, and prints, their designs quickly gained international acclaim. The pair soon came to embody the term "Swedish Modern."
When the Germans occupied Denmark and Norway in 1940, Josef Frank went into exile again and traveled to New York, where he lectured at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. During this time, he created many print designs that remain part of Svenskt Tenn’s collection today. He remained in touch with Ericson, and when the war ended, he returned to Sweden and Svenskt Tenn.
