17th-century religious painting, Saint Francis of Assisi
-
Description
Antique 17th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas artwork with an intense depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi in ecstasy. The saint is depicted in prayer, kneeling, gazing heavenward with outstretched arms as he receives the miracle of the stigmata. At his feet are typical iconographic symbols, an open book and a skull, reminiscent of the work of painters associated with the Tenebrism movement.
The strong Caravaggesque influence, with sharp contrasts of light and shadow and a warm, dramatic palette, brings this canvas closer to Neapolitan painting of the second half of the 17th century. Artwork of great expressive power, capable of creating an atmosphere of intense devotion even in a contemporary living context.
The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. It has some paint drops at the bottom (see photo), but is in overall fair condition. - More Information
