Carl-Axel Acking Opal Glass Hanging Lamp for ASEA, Sweden ca 1940s

$ 4,180
  • Description
    Carl-Axel Acking was a Swedish architect, author and furniture designer, winner of the Lunning Prize in 1952. Known for his refined sense of proportion and functional elegance, Carl-Axel Acking created this piece to blur the line between lighting fixtures and sculptural art. Its unconventional silhouette and masterful use of materials make it visually captivating both lit and not.

    ASEA, founded in 1883, was a Swedish electro-technical company headquartered in Västerås. The historic company not only produced high-quality lighting, but it also had a decisive influence on how the development of the Swedish lighting industry. This hanging ceiling lamp is a result of the collaboration between the ASEA and Carl-Axel Acking. The beautiful modernist look is based on timelessness and precision. The brass structure is quite traditional, featuring a canopy and a slender stem that leads down to hold the opal glass shade. Brass was very much one of the most popular materials of the mid-century era, and when combined with glass, a sleek shiny look is created, like this model exemplifies. This material duo makes sense from both a functional and visual standpoint. Not only is brass corrosion-resistant and durable, but it withstands the test of time, developing a beautiful patina as the years go by. Similarly, the opal glass is also a long-lasting material, and its beautiful white surface compliments the warm glow of the metal. The lamp's elongated stem and the minimalistic frame contribute to a sense of height and space, making it an ideal choice for rooms with high ceilings or for creating a focal point in more compact areas

    This lamp is the result of the simple, yet effective ethos that prioritises functionality, and the Swedish idea of “good design”. Ceiling fixtures, such as this, have the power to transform a space into a haven of relaxation. The combination of modern simplicity and timeless elegance reflects a sophisticated design, making this pendant lamp a versatile addition to various interior styles, from contemporary to classic.
