Description
Absolute extraordinary crafted, rare early 19th century roll top writing desk from the turn of the century around 1800 in Austria. This remarkable, elegantly designed nutwood writing desk was artfully made in the transition period from the so-called "Josephinism" (1780-1790) to the renowed Empire era (1800 - 1810). The extravagant executed mirrored veneer work as well as the superb shape, reflects perfectly the form language of this famous, long past period. According to the previous owner´s story who owned the castle where we found this outstanding looking, valuable Empire roll top desk, this antique kneehole desk was especially made on behalf of his ancestors. A one of a kind piece of valuable 19th century office furniture providing six drawers (three on each side) and one lockable drawer in the center. The mentioned drawers on the sides can be locked with a mechanism by moving bolts on the inner side walls (see pictures #14 & 15). One of the great highlights - and there are a lot - is the exceptional roll top, which shows absolute exceptional patterns created due to the use of elaborately mirrored veneer (picture #7). Even the edge of the folding front is so impressive - just see the gorgeous branch patterns on picture #10. When you roll up the lockable top, a beautiful red felt upholstered writing surface/ working space opens to the viewer´s eye which holds another five small, practical drawers for your writing utensils. Ebonized accents, arftully worked brass fittings and a traditional hand-polished shellac finish completes the magnificent look of this precious very early 19th century writing desk from Austria. Not only an eye-catching piece of valuable Empire furniture but also a great investment for the future.
PLEASE NOTE: this fantastic 18th century Empire writing desk comes in great old restored, ready to use condition. On customer request (and additional charge) we can also undertake a full restoration of this marvelous writing desk. In case you are interested - just get in touch with us. -
