Luciano Frigerio ‘Romanus’ Dining Table, 1970s
-
Description
Designed in the 1970s by Italian architect and designer Luciano Frigerio, this ‘Romanus’ table reveals a sculptural approach to modernist furniture. Frigerio, known for merging artisanal tradition with contemporary abstraction, created a visual language rooted in rhythm, material contrast, and architectural weight.
Design
At the centre of this piece is a commanding rectangular top in mahogany-stained wood, supported by a monolithic base that defines its sculptural presence. The base is rhythmically segmented into vertical wooden planes that flare gently forward, articulated by a sequence of hand-applied gilded brass sheets. These gold-toned elements run diagonally, cutting through the verticals with deliberate asymmetry and depth that evokes Brutalist influences while echoing classical motifs.
Luciano Frigerio developed his distinctive style through close collaboration with master craftsmen and metalworkers in Desio, Italy. This table reflects his commitment to craftsmanship and artistic composition; elements typical of his signature ‘Mobili Scultura’ series. The table’s proportions suggest both utility and monumentality, making it suited for dining or executive settings.
Condition
This table is in very good condition with age-appropriate signs of use. Some natural patina is visible on the brass inlays and light surface wear on the wood, consistent with its age and authenticity. -
