Description
Pair of late 18th century silvered wood floor lamps
Continental, Late 18th Century
Lamps: Height 116cm, width 28cm, depth 25cm
Shades: Height 42cm, diameter 50cm
A superb pair of Baroque-revival floor lamps, these pieces capture the opulence and artistry found in European decorative traditions. Generously silvered and masterfully carved, the bases combine flowing acanthus foliage, putti heads, and dramatic curves - motifs that evoke the theatrical spirit of Baroque design.
Originally fashioned in the 18th century as torcheres, they were later adapted into functioning lamps, allowing their sculptural qualities to be showcased in a more contemporary domestic setting.
The supports stand on graceful cabriole legs and are enriched with bold, high-relief detailing. Their luminous silver finish heightens the interplay of light and shadow.
Each lamp is finished with a deep green fabric shade trimmed in fine silver. The muted tones of the shades temper the brilliance of the bases, offering a measured, elegant contrast that enhances rather than competes with the intricate carving.
Undeniably decorative, this pair brings an air of cultivated grandeur to any interior. Their presence recalls the refinement of stately salons and underscores the enduring charm of classical ornamentation. -
