First Generation Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller DCM Dining Chairs in Ash
-
Description
A rare and exceptional set of six early transitional DCM (Dining Chair Metal) chairs designed by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller / Evans Products. These examples, crafted in ash, have been refinished to factory specifications, highlighting the stunning natural striations and depth of the grain. These are part of the final batch made by Evans for H.M. before they took over production.
Key early features include:
* Threaded metal and rubber “Domes of Silence” glides – the hallmark of first-generation production.
* Pre-production metal shockmount braces beneath the seats, a rare transitional detail that underscores their place in the evolution of the design.
* Sculptural ash plywood shells that balance warmth with modernist clarity.
Beyond their historical significance, these chairs are remarkably comfortable, embodying the Eames’ vision of functional elegance.
Provenance: From the original owner, who also possessed a matching ash and cork prototype table that accompanied this set. That table will soon be available separately, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire a complete ensemble. -
