Covered Vase, Circus Scenes, Gunnar Nylund for Rorstrand.
-
Description
Although this unique covered urn captures circus scenes that are decidedly populist in nature, this piece is highly sophisticated and emphatically Art Deco. Note the repeated geometric motifs at each corner, and the gold-edged star atop the lid. One side shows the circus ringmaster, his whip guiding a handsome horse through its paces. The other side depicts a half-nude female figure riding bareback and demonstrating her acrobatic skills. The vase is an especially fine example of the Art Deco porcelains designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rorstrand in what he called a "Flambé" glaze: rich browns or blue-grays highlighted with gold. Nylund worked at Rorstrand in Sweden from 1931 to 1958; and in his later years he became known for his organic forms and mottled glazes. This piece is well marked, under the lid, and also on the bottom. Nylund designed the piece, which was decorated by Oscar Dahl.
