Pair of Thistle Goblets by Tiffany, Bronze.

$ 8,900
  • Description
    Designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany for Tiffany & Co., the firm founded by his father, this rare and lustrous pair of gilt bronze goblets or chalices demonstrate the artistry and gorgeous workmanship of Tiffany and his bronze foundry. Created to celebrate the 1907 opening of the Engineers Club in New York City and as the construction of the Club was largely funded by Andrew Carnegie, a Scotsman, the thistle -- a national emblem of Scotland for centuries -- clearly formed the inspiration for these goblets. Its flower forms the cup and its leaves curl around the stem. After the elder Tiffany died in 1902, LC Tiffany became the firm's president, and thus scholars believe that he designed this goblet and his renowned bronze foundry -- which produced most of the gorgeous bases for Tiffany's lamps -- produced these goblets in 1907.
