Description
Bertil Brisborg was a central figure in Swedish lighting design during the mid-20th century, working closely with Nordiska Kompaniet to shape a distinctive Scandinavian modern design language. His designs balanced traditional craftsmanship with emerging modernist ideas, often combining warm natural materials with restrained, functional forms. His work reflects the Swedish emphasis on comfort, proportion, and everyday usability, making his lamps enduring pieces.
This model “31915” table lamp from the 1940s is a clear example of Brisborg’s thoughtful approach to form. The lamp features a slender, tapered wooden stem that rises from a brass circular base, creating a balanced and grounded silhouette. The warm tone of the metal adds a quiet decorative note without overpowering the design. The design is completed by a gently scalloped fabric shade that softens the overall expression, diffusing the light in an ambient and even way that feels intimate rather than harsh. The proportions are carefully judged, allowing the lamp to sit comfortably on a side table, desk, or nightstand while maintaining a strong visual presence. Every element feels intentional, from the mix of materials to the restrained ornamentation, resulting in a design that is both practical and visually pleasing.
This model is a strong example of Swedish mid-century lighting that prioritises atmosphere and longevity. Made by Bertil Brisborg for Nordiska Kompaniet, it represents a high level of Swedish design and craftsmanship offering functional lighting while adding character and atmosphere, ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, or reading corners.
