Description
A rare and finely executed early 20th century candle lamp produced by the renowned Tiffany Studios, United States, circa 1906. This example represents an important period in Tiffany Studios’ lighting production, when Louis Comfort Tiffany pioneered the integration of hand-blown Favrile glass with sculptural bronze bases to create richly decorative yet functional objects.
The lamp features an open-topped (empty heading) jeweled Favrile glass shade, hand-blown and decorated Favrile glass, patented by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1894, is distinguished by its iridescent surface, achieved through the incorporation of metallic oxides into the molten glass, resulting in depth, luminosity, and subtle color variation unique to each piece.
The shade is supported by a finely cast patinated bronze base, designed with elegant proportions to balance the glass form while emphasizing the interplay between metal and glass—an essential characteristic of Tiffany Studios lighting. The bronze base is stamped and numbered TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1210, and the shade is signed, confirming the lamp’s authenticity and model designation.
The lamp measures approximately 13⅞ inches in height with a diameter of 5⅜ inches (35 × 14 cm). It is in good condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs noted. The bronze retains an attractive, even patina, and the glass remains vibrant and intact.
This candle lamp is a highly collectible example of early Tiffany Studios lighting, illustrating the studio’s innovative approach to decorative arts during the first decade of the 20th century. Both sculptural and functional, it stands as an exceptional piece for collectors of Tiffany Studios, Arts and Crafts design, and important American decorative art. -
