Description
PAIR OF FRENCH GILT-BRONZE WALL SCONCES
Circa late 19th/early 20th century
ref. 502JIP14L
23 1/4" H x 13 1/2" W x 7" D
This striking pair of two-arm gilt-bronze wall sconces draws inspiration from the Neoclassical tradition of Louis XVI design. The backplate takes the form of a classical torch with a bold fluting where the upper cup swells. This torch is morphed into a quiver of arrows in the crown, the feathered fletchings beautifully chiseled and chased at the top of each.
Extending from the central support, the scrolled candle arms project from sculpted female masks, their expressive faces flanking the column beneath a finely detailed swag of garland. Each candle arm terminates in exquisitely cast and chiseled gadrooned bobeche, supporting a candle cup with intricate foliate details. The base of the torch tapers into a finial of a pinecone motif beneath repeating water-leaves and acanthus foliage.
Condition:
Sconces were electrified at one point - while that was reversed, all of the holes remain for a professional to efficiently reinstall wiring. Light wear to the gilding throughout. They present beautifully and are ready to place. -
