Description
A custom occasional or coffee table produced by NAMCO Australia, circa 1955, combining a richly toned mahogany plywood top with a continuous arched anodized aluminum frame. The design reflects a disciplined postwar modernist approach, where structural clarity and material precision are central to the form.
NAMCO Australia began licensed production of Warren McArthur designs in 1947. After the Warren McArthur Corporation closed on December 31, 1948, NAMCO continued production of McArthur-based designs into the 1950s. This table belongs to that period and retains a number of specific construction traits associated with NAMCO’s licensed McArthur production.
The anodized aluminum frame is executed in uniform 1-inch-diameter tubing throughout. The base is formed as a continuous arched structure, emphasizing both strength and visual continuity while minimizing unnecessary joints. This direct, efficient use of bent tubular aluminum is fully consistent with the engineering logic associated with Warren McArthur design.
Equally notable is the use of contrasting aluminum components: the primary tubular elements present a slightly warmer tone, while the turned connector and fastening elements show a subtly grayer cast. This tonal shift indicates the use of two different aluminums and is a distinctive and identifiable feature of NAMCO McArthur furniture.
The construction remains clear and deliberate, with exposed joinery and mechanically resolved connections that reflect the practical elegance of the design.
The legs have their original cast rubber feet, an important surviving detail that reinforces both authenticity and function. The custom mahogany plywood top provides a warm visual counterpoint to the anodized frame, softening the industrial character of the aluminum and giving the table a more tailored domestic presence.
Compact but visually substantial, the table works well as a coffee table or occasional table and stands as a strong example of the Australian continuation of McArthur design principles in the postwar period.
Condition
Good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use. Minor surface wear and scattered marks to the mahogany top. Aluminum frame shows light, even age-appropriate wear with visible tonal variation between tube and connector elements as described. Original cast rubber feet intact. -
