Description
A beautiful Swedish Grace style pewter table lamp with rattan shade. Sweden, 1930s-1940s.
Features a wonderful stepped square base with a subtle crenellated band. The restrained geometry and architectural detailing place the design within the transition from Swedish Grace to early Scandinavian functionalism. Swedish Grace style is the elegant Nordic interpretation of Art Deco and late neoclassicism. The more restrained design and shapes indicate this table lamp to be a piece of the later period of the Swedish Grace style and the early stages of Scandinavian functionalism from around 1935-1945.
From the 14th century onward pewter became a common material for tablewares, offering a more affordable alternative to silver while retaining a similar lustre. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pewter experienced a revival as a decorative material. Designers associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and later with Art Nouveau and Art Deco rediscovered its understated qualities. In Scandinavia, and particularly in Sweden, pewter found a renewed place in modern interiors, with notable workshops and manufacturers being Svenskt Tenn, Ystad Metall and GAB.
The nicely aged pewter surface of this table lamp has developed a wonderful subtle patina over time. The lamp is fitted with a later woven rattan shade whose warm natural texture contrasts beautifully with the cool metal base.
The lamp comes in a good condition with a very nice patina on the pewter and the rattan. Originally - EU - wired.
