Description
Designed by Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) and produced by Tenreiro Arquitetura de Interiores S.A., this pair of armchairs emerges from a pivotal moment in Brazilian modernism—when domestic interiors became sites of rigorous architectural thinking. Originating from a private residence in Teresópolis, a region closely aligned with mid-century modernist development, the chairs embody Tenreiro’s disciplined pursuit of proportion, lightness, and structural clarity.
The composition is resolved through a restrained, architectural silhouette. Gently flared arms and a subtly inclined back articulate comfort through geometry rather than excess. The stance is defined by sharply tapered legs in ebonized hardwood, introducing contrast and visual lift while reinforcing Tenreiro’s enduring preoccupation with lightness. Volumes remain compact yet generous, with a refined balance between mass and openness and clean, continuous transitions across planes.
Constructed in solid hardwood, the frames demonstrate material integrity and precision in joinery. The legs have been professionally restored, reestablishing tonal depth and surface continuity while preserving the original geometry. Seats and backs have been newly reupholstered in a mottled off-white textile—selected for its quiet texture and tonal restraint—allowing the architectural framework to remain primary. Each chair retains the original “Tenreiro Arquitetura de Interiores S.A.” manufacturing seal, affirming authorship and workshop provenance.
Function is fully integrated into form: the angled backrest and supportive seat create an ergonomic experience without disturbing the composition’s visual equilibrium. Presented in excellent vintage condition, the pair reflects a careful restoration executed in alignment with period materials and proportional intent—an exacting example of Tenreiro’s contribution to the language of Brazilian modern design. -
