Description
This rare pair of table lamps, model B-90, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own company in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The B-90 model reflects Jakobsson’s commitment to creating lighting that is both visually sculptural and atmospherically refined—a hallmark of his approach to mid-century Swedish design.
Each lamp features a conical shade crafted from white lacquered metal, delicately balanced atop a slender brass stem. The conical form is clean and geometric, tapering toward the top and gently flaring at the base to direct light downward. This configuration provides both focused illumination and a soft ambient glow, ideal for bedside or desk use. The lacquered finish, original to the lamps, displays subtle signs of age—small variations and gentle wear that add character and authenticity to the surface without compromising the integrity of the design.
The vertical brass rods introduce a contrasting material that complements the minimalist metal shades. Over time, these elements have developed a natural, warm patina, enhancing their vintage quality and further highlighting the mid-century aesthetic. The combination of white enamel and aged brass is visually balanced and restrained, offering a timeless expression of Scandinavian modernism.
Each lamp retains its original manufacturer’s markings, confirming its provenance from Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB. This stamp affirms the lamps’ authenticity and their place within the designer’s extensive oeuvre of lighting objects. Jakobsson, known for his experimentation with layered and diffused lighting, frequently worked with simple geometric forms and high-quality materials to create lighting that was both atmospheric and architecturally elegant.
The dimensions of each lamp are 14 cm in width, 24 cm in depth, and 50 cm in height (approximately 5.5 x 9.4 x 19.7 inches). These proportions provide a tall yet unobtrusive profile, making the pair well-suited for symmetrical placement on a console, sideboard, or large desk. Their scale ensures they function as both sources of light and sculptural design elements.
In very good vintage condition, the lamps show minor surface wear appropriate to their age, including light patination of the brass and gentle wear to the lacquer finish. These signs of use contribute to their charm and speak to their history as authentic mid-century design pieces.
Together, this pair of B-90 lamps exemplifies Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s ability to combine material richness with minimalist form. Their enduring appeal lies in their simplicity, craftsmanship, and capacity to add both light and architectural clarity to an interior setting.
