Description
This rare pair of President table lamps, designed by Jo Hammerborg and produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark, exemplifies the refined material balance and functional modernism that defined Scandinavian lighting design in the mid-20th century. With their harmonious combination of teak and brass, these lamps reflect Hammerborg’s commitment to clean lines, material honesty, and subtle detailing.
Each lamp features a conical brass shade with a softly tapered profile that gently directs light downward while diffusing a warm ambient glow. The satin finish on the brass creates a muted luster, avoiding glare while enhancing the lamp’s sculptural presence. Over time, the brass has developed a natural patina, enriching the surface with subtle tonal variation and underscoring the lamps’ vintage character.
The stem and base are partially constructed in solid teak, with a warm, reddish-brown hue and visible grain that introduces organic warmth to the overall composition. The teak elements are smoothly integrated into the brass structure, reinforcing the sense of visual balance and craftsmanship. The juxtaposition of cool metal and warm wood is a signature of Hammerborg’s aesthetic, capturing the material contrasts central to Danish modern design.
Jo Hammerborg (1920–1982), who served as head of design at Fog & Mørup from the late 1950s through the 1970s, was instrumental in transforming the company into a leader of contemporary lighting. His background in both metalwork and fine arts allowed him to approach lighting design with a sculptural sensibility, always tempered by functionality and clarity of form.
This pair of President lamps remains in good vintage condition. Minor signs of wear are present—such as light surface marks and a soft patina on the brass—consistent with careful use and the lamps’ age. The structure is sound, and the electrical components are intact, preserving the integrity and usability of the design. As a matched pair by one of Denmark’s most respected lighting designers, these lamps represent both collectible design history and enduring utility.
