Brazilian Round Coffee Table in Rosewood & Glass by Novo Rumo, Brazil, 1960s

Produced by Novo Rumo in the 1960s, this Brazilian Modern coffee table combines sculptural rosewood construction with disciplined geometry and refined industrial detailing.

The architectural base is formed from expertly bent Brazilian rosewood, or jacarandá. Four sweeping sections curve inward to create an open, symmetrical composition resembling overlapping petals. Viewed from above, the structure forms a graphic four-pointed motif; from the side, its continuous bands of wood create a rhythmic interplay of curves, negative space and structural tension.

A circular glass top rests above the base, secured by exposed chromed-metal fittings. The semi smoked glass preserves an unobstructed view of the sculptural framework, while the cool metal elements introduce a precise industrial counterpoint to the warmth and expressive grain of the rosewood.

The table reflects the creative energy of postwar Brazilian design, when São Paulo manufacturers united traditional cabinetmaking, native hardwoods and increasingly sophisticated production techniques. Bent wood allowed designers to explore more fluid and architecturally complex forms while retaining the material richness central to Brazilian modernism.

Recently refinished, the rosewood reveals beautifully figured grain, warm amber undertones and deep tonal variation. Both functional and visually compelling, this round coffee table is a refined example of Novo Rumo’s contribution to Brazilian mid-century modern design.
