Description
A commanding pair of club armchairs by Brazilian designer Jorge Jabour, created in Brazil during the 1960s. Generous in proportion yet architecturally composed, the chairs embody the warmth, material richness, and human-centered comfort that distinguish the finest Brazilian modernist furniture.
Each armchair is supported by a sculptural frame of solid Brazilian rosewood, or jacarandá. The wood has aged beautifully, developing deep reddish-brown and umber tones that bring exceptional warmth and character to the pair. Expressive grain patterns animate the rounded legs and lower rails, while the exposed structure gives the substantial upholstered bodies a sense of balance and visual lift.
The chairs have been newly upholstered in luxurious sage mohair with nuanced bronze undertones. The fabric’s dense pile and restrained luster subtly shift with the light, revealing notes of muted green, warm bronze, and soft olive. This sophisticated palette complements the depth of the aged rosewood while preserving the quiet elegance of Jabour’s original design.
Comfort is central to the composition. Tall, gently reclined backrests provide generous support, while deep seats, softly crowned cushions, and carefully positioned upholstered arms create an enveloping seating experience. Jabour achieves this comfort through proportion and intelligent geometry rather than excessive volume: the chairs feel substantial and inviting without appearing heavy.
Presented together, the armchairs possess a strong sculptural presence. Their high backs and confident silhouettes anchor a room, while the softness of the sage mohair lends them an approachable, residential character. Equally suited to a living room, library, private office, or refined hospitality interior, they function as both exceptionally comfortable seating and a distinctive architectural statement.
This pair reflects a uniquely Brazilian interpretation of modernism—one grounded in natural materials, masterful craftsmanship, and an understanding of furniture as an intimate part of daily life. With their beautifully aged rosewood frames, luxurious new upholstery, and rare combination of comfort and presence, these Jorge Jabour armchairs represent a compelling example of Brazilian mid-century modern design. -
