Description
A commanding example of Brazilian modern design, this monumental four-seat sofa was produced by Celina in Brazil during the 1960s. Its architectural silhouette is defined by a substantial rosewood frame, broad rectilinear arms, and an exceptionally long, low profile that gives the piece a strong presence while retaining a sense of visual balance.
The sofa’s upholstery is composed of four individual seat cushions and four corresponding back cushions, creating a measured rhythm across the expansive frame. Upholstered inner arm panels soften the rigorous geometry of the structure, while the generously proportioned cushions provide inviting comfort without diminishing the clarity of the design. The celadon mohair introduces a sophisticated, quietly nuanced color—somewhere between muted green and mineral gray—that complements the warmth and expressive character of the rosewood.
Viewed from the back, the sofa reveals an equally considered composition. A long sculpted rosewood panel anchors the backrest, while the open lower framework exposes the relationship between the cushions and the structural grid. This fully resolved reverse profile allows the sofa to stand confidently away from a wall, making it particularly suited to an open-plan living room or a large central seating arrangement.
The Brazilian rosewood has aged beautifully, developing a deep, warm patina that accentuates its dramatic grain and natural tonal variation. Its richly figured surface brings organic movement to the sofa’s disciplined lines, embodying the material intelligence and craftsmanship associated with the finest Brazilian modern furniture of the period.
Both imposing and refined, this Celina sofa balances architectural strength with exceptional material richness. The sophisticated celadon mohair, expansive proportions, and sculptural rosewood construction give the piece a commanding presence—an important and highly functional statement of 1960s Brazilian modernism. -
