Glazed Stoneware Table Lamp by Nils Kähler for Kähler Keramik, Denmark ca 1950s

Nils Kähler belonged to the fourth generation of ceramicists, continuing the Kähler family tradition. He worked at the Kähler ceramics factory in Næstved, one of Denmark’s long-established pottery workshops. Table lamps formed an important part of this production during the 1950s and 1960s, with examples featuring unique glazing and relief decoration.

This table lamp features glazing and relief decoration and has a compact stoneware base. It’s construction starts with a broader circular foot before narrowing slightly before rising into a long tapered neck. Its surface is divided as clearly by texture as it is by colour and form. The neck is defined by the unglazed stoneware, where the granular clay remains visible, while a muted yellow glaze covers the lower section. Subtle diagonal ridges decorate the body, catching darker tones of glaze and giving this relatively small base depth. This type of partial glazing, as well as decoration is characteristic of Kähler lamps from the period. Above, the elongated neck creates a vertical counterpoint to the broad conical fabric shade. The shade is the biggest part of the piece, juxtaposing the small stoneware body. When illuminated, the shade casts a warm light downward onto the ceramic, highlighting the beige and sandy tones.

Its restrained palette is precisely what gives the lamp such versatility: the warm colours bring charm into a room without overwhelming the surroundings. On a bedside table, console or side table, it works as both atmospheric lighting and a strong piece of Danish studio pottery, with enough character to remain eye-catching even when unlit.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The table lamp has recently been reconditioned and rewired. The shade is a later replacement. Due to the age and nature of the stoneware, the lamp may have marks, and discolouration. This lamp is compatible with an E26 / E27 standard fitting. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
