Description
Ercole Barovier vase for Ferro Toso Barovier, Italy, 1930's, Murano. The hand-blown spherical body features clear blown glass with oxidized silver leaf decoration and applied black rims. The body rests on a circular pedestal base.
Barovier & Toso is an Italian Venetian glass company with origins tracing to the Barovier family in Murano in 1295, making it one of the world's oldest family businesses. Jacobello Barovier was the family's first documented glass master, and Angelo Barovier developed crystalline glass in the 15th century. The Barovier family merged with the Toso family in 1936, becoming Barovier & Toso in 1942. Under creative director Ercole Barovier (1922–1972), the company developed techniques such as 'rostrato' and 'Rugiada'. Specializing in chandeliers, mirrors, and decorative objects for affluent clients and luxury venues, its works are exhibited in major museums globally. Ercole Barovier was the artistic director until his death and had the opportunity to execute his whimsical creative talents to the fullest.
