Description
Dimensions: 49 ½” H x 21” W x 20 ¾” D
This 19th-century Italian altarpiece is carved and gilt circa 1870 on a wooden faux marble base. Included in the piece are architectural elements that reflect the 18th-19th Century’s period of Gothic Revival. The open triangular peaks recall flying buttresses; the four scalloped arches recall carved portals into Gothic cathedrals; and all throughout, the openness and verticality are reminiscent of Gothic architecture’s emphasis on lightness and height. The gilding is beautifully worn with several areas revealing the red bole over which the gold leaf was laid to give it a warmer tone. The surface of the poplar base has been painted with faux marble veining in shades of grey and brown to further the altarpiece’s sense of grandeur. This would make a stellar display or accent piece in any home. Gently cleaned and ready for use in your interiors. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering the age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Please view the detailed image gallery for the current condition or reach out with any questions. -
