“Chanceler” Side Tables in Rosewood & Metal by Jorge Zalszupin, 1960s

Description
Designed by Jorge Zalszupin in the 1960s, this exceptional pair of “Chanceler” side tables exemplifies the architectural rigor and material sophistication of Brazilian modernism. Trained as an architect, Zalszupin approached furniture as spatial structure, translating principles of proportion, balance, and construction into an intimate domestic scale.
Each table features a crisply proportioned square top crafted from richly figured Brazilian rosewood. Broad bands of expressive grain move across the surface in warm shades of amber, cognac, and deep brown, allowing the natural character of the timber to become an essential part of the composition. Slender edges reinforce the top’s clean, planar quality while maintaining a sense of visual lightness.
Below, intersecting rosewood supports form a dynamic X-shaped base around a dark metal central element. The contrast between the warmth of the rosewood and the precision of the metal introduces both structural clarity and visual tension. Viewed from different angles, the base shifts between symmetry and movement, giving the tables a sculptural presence beyond their practical function.
The restrained geometry and exposed construction reflect the confident design language of 1960s Brazil—a period in which architects and designers combined modernist rationalism with exceptional craftsmanship and the expressive qualities of tropical hardwoods. Elegant yet commanding, these Jorge Zalszupin “Chanceler” tables may be used as side tables, end tables, or low accent pieces, bringing a refined architectural presence to a contemporary or historic interior. | Depth: 31 in -
