Description
Cristal Art elegant oval wall mirror, Model 2727, in hand-cut beveled smoked glass, mirrored glass and brass, Turin, Italy, 1950s.
The mirror features a large oval central mirror surrounded by individually cut panels of smoky gray glass, each finely beveled along its edges and arranged continuously around the perimeter. The beveled surfaces catch and reflect the light, giving the surrounding glass subtle depth and variation in tone.
The glass panels are framed between slender bands of warm gilt brass, creating a refined contrast with the cool smoky coloration of the glass. The elongated oval form and precisely fitted individual segments give the mirror a strong architectural quality while retaining the elegance characteristic of Cristal Art's Italian mid-century production.
The mirror retains its original period backing and hardware and may be hung vertically or horizontally.
A particularly sophisticated example of Cristal Art's work, distinguished by its hand-cut beveled construction, smoky gray coloration and elegant proportions.
Founded in Turin in the mid-1940s by Giuseppe and Giovanni Donna, Cristal Art became one of Italy’s important postwar manufacturers of decorative glass and crystal furnishings. The company specialized in mirrors, consoles, tables and other furnishings distinguished by sophisticated techniques of cutting, beveling, polishing, curving and silvering plate glass. By the 1950s, Cristal Art had established itself alongside firms such as Fontana Arte and Sant’Ambrogio & De Berti as a leading Italian producer of finely crafted glass furnishings. -
