Flavio Poli

Italian, 1900 - 1984
Flavio Poli was an Italian glass artist and designer who worked in the mid-20th century. He was born in 1900 in Chioggia, Italy, and trained as a painter and sculptor before turning to glassmaking.

Poli is best known for his work as a designer and artistic director at the Seguso Vetri d'Arte glass factory in Murano, near Venice. He joined the company in 1934 and worked there for over 20 years, during which time he developed a distinctive style that combined traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques with modern design sensibilities.

Poli's designs often featured clean lines, bold colors, and simple forms, with an emphasis on texture and surface treatments. He was particularly known for his use of sommerso glass, a technique in which layers of differently colored glass are fused together to create a multilayered effect.

In addition to his work at Seguso, Poli also collaborated with other glass factories in Murano and worked as a freelance designer. His glass artworks have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and are highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century modern design.
