EDWARD MITCHELL BANNISTER (1833–1901), Landscape with Cattle and Figure, circa Early 1880s. Oil on canvas, 11 x 15 inches. This painting is included in the Bannister Catalogue Raisonné. Bannister was the first African American artist to win national recognition. He earned First Prize at the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition, despite an attempt by the jury to revoke the Bronze Medal when they noted his race.
