Carlo Mollino

Italian, 1905 - 1973
Carlo Mollino (1905–1973) was an innovative Italian architect, designer, and polymath celebrated for his distinct blend of engineering precision and artistic imagination. Based in Turin, Mollino defied the Rationalist norms of his time with furniture and interior designs that embraced surrealism, organic form, and expressive flair. He created nearly 200 unique furniture pieces—such as the iconic Fenis chair and Cavour desk—often crafted for specific interiors rather than mass production. His architectural achievements include the Casa del Sole, RAI Auditorium, and the Teatro Regio opera house, each showcasing his theatrical and dynamic vision. Mollino also explored photography, skiing, automotive design, and aeronautics, solidifying his reputation as one of Italy’s most visionary and unconventional modernists. Today, his work remains highly collectible and influential in the design world.
