Gunnel Nyman

Finnish, 1909 - 1948
Gunnel Nyman (1909–1948) was a trailblazing Finnish designer whose work helped define modern Scandinavian glass and lighting design. Trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki, she collaborated with leading Finnish glassworks including Riihimäki and Nuutajärvi. Nyman became known for her fluid, sculptural forms—often mouth-blown or engraved—that balanced functionality with a poetic sense of light and material. Though her life was cut short at age 39, she left behind a legacy of innovation that shaped the direction of Finnish design. Her work, from delicate vases to rare lighting pieces, remains highly sought after for its elegance, craftsmanship, and timeless modernity.
