Karl Hjalmar Idman, born on December 11, 1872, in Helsinki, transitioned his entrepreneurial journey to Pori, a quaint city in southwestern Finland, as he matured. At the age of 25, in 1897, he initiated his inaugural venture, Idman, operating from a residence that doubled as his workplace. Initially specializing in the retail of lamps, alongside glassware and porcelain items, Idman thrived under Hjalmar's leadership. However, Hjalmar harbored ambitions for broader market penetration, particularly in the wholesale domain.
In 1919, Hjalmar Idman relinquished control of his enterprise and resettled in Helsinki. A year later, in 1920, he forged a partnership with Einar Ahlström (1891-1959), proprietor of Oy E. Ahlström & Co. Ab, a distinguished glass and china emporium in Helsinki. Collaboratively, they birthed Hjalmar Idman Oy, focusing primarily on the distribution of crystal glass. Spearheaded by Hjalmar as CEO, the venture garnered support from a consortium of 67 stakeholders, including co-founder Einar Ahlström and his sibling, Jalmari Ahlström (1896-1944). Their inaugural retail outlet graced the corner of Aleksanterinkatu and Mikonkatu in central Helsinki, later expanding to Kuopio and Tampere.
Tragedy struck in 1924 when Karl Hjalmar Idman passed away at the age of 52. Following his demise, his spouse Astrid Idman divested her 14 percent stake to co-founder Einar Ahlström, remaining involved in the enterprise. In 1928, the firm underwent rebranding, emerging as Idman Oy.
In 1937, Idman Oy diversified its portfolio with the inception of Neon-Teho Oy, a subsidiary specializing in neon signage production, jointly operated with Jalmari Ahlström. This collaboration endured until Jalmari's demise in 1944, culminating in the amalgamation of Neon-Teho Oy into Idman Oy's operations, consolidating lamp and neon light manufacturing under one roof. The wartime scarcity necessitated judicious resource management.
Further diversification ensued with the acquisition of a woodworking and lampshade factory in Helsinki, catalyzed by Mr. and Mrs. Holman's partnership with Idman Oy post-1946. Despite post-war material constraints, the collaboration thrived, complemented by Finnish luminary Gunnel Nyman's design contributions. The company's evolution saw a stake acquisition in Oy Taito Ab in 1953, precipitating a merger despite Paavo Tynell's reservations. Idman Oy's subsequent pivot toward the domestic market in the early 1960s culminated in series production enhancement and operational consolidation in Mikkeli.
Idman Oy's strategic realignment in 1965 prioritized lighting product manufacturing, leading to the cessation of electrical wholesale operations. Under Nokia's stewardship from 1981, Idman Oy flourished, heralding new product lines and expanded research and development endeavors. Subsequent corporate restructuring saw the emergence of SLO-Idman Oy in 1988, marking the end of the Idman brand. Merger proceedings with Valasinpaja Oy in 1990 reinstated Idman Oy, only to culminate in Philips Lighting B.V.'s acquisition by 1994. The subsequent integration into Philips Oy in 2007 concluded Idman Oy's storied legacy, culminating in its present-day incarnation as part of the Safegate group.
