Malick Sidibé (1935–2016) was a pioneering Malian photographer celebrated for his vibrant black-and-white images that capture the youth culture of postcolonial Mali. He began his artistic training early and opened his own studio, Studio Malick, in 1962. Sidibé’s work documents the lively social life of Bamako’s youth, including dance parties, sporting events, and intimate studio portraits featuring Western-inspired fashion.
His photographs provide a vivid window into Mali’s cultural transformation during the 1960s and 1970s, capturing moments of joy, style, and identity. Sidibé’s legacy continues to influence photography worldwide.
