Roger Capron
French, 1922 - 2006
Roger Capron (1922-2006) was a French ceramic artist and designer who is widely recognized as one of the most important figures in the development of French ceramics in the mid-20th century. He was born in Vincennes, France and studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris before setting up his own studio in Vallauris, a town in the south of France known for its ceramic tradition.
Capron's work is characterized by its bold shapes, simple forms, and graphic designs. He was known for his use of abstract motifs, including stylized birds, flowers, and geometric patterns, which he often applied to his ceramics using screen-printing techniques. His pieces were also notable for their use of texture and color, which helped to give his work a distinctively tactile and organic quality.
Capron was highly influential in the development of French ceramics in the post-war period, and his work was exhibited widely in France and abroad. He also collaborated with a number of other artists and designers, including the architect Bernard Zehrfuss and the painter Jean Picart Le Doux.
Today, Capron's ceramics are highly sought-after by collectors and are represented in major museum collections around the world. He is widely regarded as one of the most important ceramic artists of the 20th century, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary ceramic artists.
