Ryoko Endo Artist Bio
Ryoko Endo (b. 1951) is a Japanese-American artist based in New York City since 1994. Born into a traditional family in Fukushima, Japan, Endo's artistic journey began with her studies in traditional Sumi ink calligraphy. This foundation led her to develop a fluid approach to brushwork, a technique often seen in contemporary calligraphy but rarely applied to acrylic painting, lending her work a distinctive energy.
After moving to New York, Endo studied under Kikuo Saito, a second-generation Abstract Expressionist artist. Saito's influence profoundly shaped her understanding of color and its relationships, which she explores in her vibrant abstract paintings. Endo's work is characterized by thick layers of paint, where opaque and translucent applications create a captivating push-pull effect that draws viewers in. The delicate balance of harmony and discord in her compositions reflects the complexities of human experience.
In her recent exhibition, "Crescendo," presented by Octavia Art Gallery, Endo showcases a series of abstract paintings that embody a gradual increase in intensity, mirroring the musical concept of crescendo. This body of work includes long horizontal canvases and triptychs that illustrate the dynamic interplay of color and movement. Endo believes that her art serves as a powerful method of communication, encouraging viewers to connect with their emotions and experiences.
Endo studied graphic design and typography at Musashino Art University in Tokyo and continued her education in painting at the Art Students League in New York. She has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows, including venues such as ChaShaMa and the Hamptons Fine Art Fair. Her accolades include the Trudy and Henry Gillette Painting Scholarship and a grant from the Lloyd Sherwood Foundation.
Endo's work is housed in several prestigious collections, including the permanent collection of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Through her art, she aims to inspire others to discover their true paths in life, a journey she passionately embraces herself.
