Description
A monumental glass mosaic map depicting the city of Venice as viewed from above. Created by the renowned Murano firm Salviati & Co., the work utilizes a rich palette of blue and turquoise glass to represent the lagoon, contrasted with terracotta and earthy tones for the city's architectural footprint. The piece features a gold-tesserae signature "SALVIATI & C." in the lower corner and a compass rose in the lower right. This large-scale work is executed with traditional Venetian techniques, incorporating gold leaf tesserae for the city's name "VENEZIA" and cardinal details.
Salviati & Co. (Est. 1859): Founded by Dr. Antonio Salviati in Murano, the firm was instrumental in the 19th-century revival of Venetian glassmaking. They achieved international acclaim for their architectural mosaics, which adorn major monuments such as St. Paul's Cathedral in London and the Paris Opera. The company specialized in reclaiming the lost techniques of the Renaissance, particularly the use of vibrant smalti and gold leaf glass.
