Description
‘Juan Sebastián Elcano’, Very large Spanish silver nef
Spanish, 20th Century
Height 92cm, width 128cm, depth 23cm
This exceptional Spanish silver nef is based on the Juan Sebastián Elcano, the celebrated four-masted topsail schooner launched in 1927 as a training vessel for the Spanish Navy. Still in active service today, the ship regularly embarks on long international voyages. Its name honors Juan Sebastián Elcano (1476–1526), the Basque navigator who completed the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1522, ensuring Spain’s maritime prestige and cementing his reputation as a pioneering explorer.
The nef itself is a testament to masterful craftsmanship. Its hull is enriched with detailed high-relief ornamentation, producing a variety of textures and depth. The deck above comes alive with miniature silver sailors, each figure carefully modeled to portray dynamic movement and lifelike activity. Rising above them, the sails are skillfully fashioned in silver, their form designed to appear as though filled with wind.
The piece is presented on a stepped rectangular wooden plinth, centered with a silver plaque inscribed with the ship’s name, lending both balance and presence.
With its superb quality and intricate detail, this striking nef is not only a remarkable work of silver artistry but also an ideal acquisition for collectors drawn to maritime history and naval tradition.
The silver weighs approximately 14,000 grams. -
