Blenko Persian Blue Crackle Glass Vase Mid Century
-
Description
Blenko's "Persian Blue" crackle glass vases were part of the company's Mid-Century Modern designs, popular for their vibrant color and unique texture. Each piece hand blown by an artist. Maintaining the pontil scar mark to bottom. The crackle glass texture is achieved through a glassmaking technique that uses rapid temperature change. While the glass is still hot, it is briefly and completely submerged in a bucket of cold water. The sudden thermal shock causes the surface to crack extensively. The cracked glass is quickly removed from the water and reheated in the furnace. The reheating process seals the cracks, smooths any sharp edges, and strengthens the glass, while the fine, irregular crackle pattern remains visible within the material.
The artisan then continues to blow and shape the glass into its final form
The resulting texture is a permanent, internal network of fine lines that catches the light in intriguing patterns. The process relies on the artisan's skill to control the timing and temperature to achieve the desired effect.
