Brutalist Free Standing Sculpture by Stuart Matthews
-
Description
An outstanding free standing brutalist sculpture by Stuart Matthews. Acquired from a retired American Airlines executives collection in 1996, this amazing brutalist sculpture by prolific mid-century Texas artist, Stuart Mathews. This sculpture exemplifies his mastery in blending mixed metals into compelling abstract forms. Mathews—who honed his craft at the Art Institute of Chicago and Cranbrook Academy in the 1950s—was renowned for creating visually dynamic compositions that seamlessly fuse material and form.
This particular sculpture highlights his signature use of brass, bronze, and copper, enriched with varied patinas and textures and was created in the brutalist period of Harry Bertoia and Paul Evans. The result is a harmonious and timeless artwork that holds as much aesthetic impact today as when it was first created.
