Description
A beautifully crafted mid-20th-century Chinese porcelain vase, finely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with elegant phoenix birds, scrolling foliage, and blossoming flowers. The vase features a classically proportioned baluster form, with a gently swelling body rising to a graceful flared neck and accented with the same painted decoration. The surface is richly animated with a pair of elegantly rendered phoenix birds surrounded by scrolling foliage and flowering peonies. Traditionally associated with renewal, harmony, and prosperity, the phoenix and floral motifs create a particularly graceful and symbolic decorative composition. The cobalt-blue decoration varies subtly in intensity across the surface, giving the hand-painted ornamentation depth and movement against the softly sandy-toned porcelain ground.
The vase measures approximately 14 3/4 inches high and 7 1/2 inches in diameter, giving it an impressive yet versatile scale for display on a console, mantel, cabinet, sideboard, or étagère. Its elegant silhouette and richly decorated surface make it equally suitable as a standalone decorative centerpiece or as part of a collection of Chinese porcelain and Asian decorative arts. The vase is in great antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use.
A refined example of mid-20th-century Chinese decorative porcelain, combining a graceful classical form with beautifully executed cobalt-blue decoration and traditional phoenix and floral symbolism. -
