19th Century Bronze of Emperor Napoleon I as an Officer of the Imperial Guard
-
Description
This table-top bronze sculpture of Napoleon Bonaparte is by Emile Guillemin (1841-1907). Napoleon wears the uniform of a colonel in the Imperial Guard, which was a deliberate choice to emphasize his humility as opposed to the flamboyant uniforms of the French Imperial forces. The imposing bronze figure has an attractive black patina. It depicts Napoleon standing on pavement, wearing a bicorne hat, culottes and stockings, his right leg forward, and his arms crossed over his chest. His pose is highlighted by an attractive striated rose marble stepped plinth base. The artist, Emile Guillemin, grew up during the era of Napoleon III (in power 1852-1879) when nostalgia for Napoleon I was in fashion and when the cult of Napoleon I was promoted as propaganda by the Second Empire government of Napoleon III.
