Description
An elegant pair of silver-plated sculptural candlesticks designed by the renowned Mexican silversmith Emilia Castillo for her celebrated workshop in Taxco, Mexico. Bearing the model number TO-85, these handcrafted candleholders beautifully embody Castillo's signature fusion of contemporary sculpture, organic forms, and traditional Taxco silversmithing.
Each candlestick rises from a striking tripod base formed by three overlapping scallop shells, their deeply fluted surfaces creating a dynamic play of light and shadow. A softly faceted column supports a sculptural triangular drip pan with a cylindrical candle socket, producing a refined silhouette that feels both modern and timeless. Inspired by the sea and nature, the design reflects Castillo's lifelong fascination with organic forms while remaining unmistakably rooted in the artistry of Mexican silver.
The underside of each candlestick bears the original workshop hallmark:
"Emilia Castillo • Mexico M.R. • Plateado • TO-85 • #2."
About Emilia Castillo
Emilia Castillo is recognized as one of the most influential contemporary designers to emerge from Taxco, Mexico's legendary center of silver production. Continuing the tradition established by William Spratling and the master silversmiths who transformed Taxco into an international design capital during the twentieth century, Castillo introduced a distinctly modern aesthetic characterized by sculptural silhouettes, natural motifs, semi-precious stone inlays, and exceptional hand craftsmanship.
Her work bridges traditional Mexican metalsmithing with contemporary decorative arts, earning an international following among collectors of Mexican Modernism, Taxco silver, and museum-quality decorative objects. Today, Emilia Castillo's designs are prized for their originality, craftsmanship, and enduring elegance, making them highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
These candlesticks exemplify her ability to transform functional objects into sculptural works of art, equally suited for contemporary, coastal, Mid-Century Modern, or traditional interiors.
