French 18th Century Gilt Barometer
-
Description
A stunning gold gilt Louis XVI barometer, made in France circa 1780. The instrument was used to measure atmospheric pressure and had a thermometer below the central dial to measure air temperature. Although this barometer has lost its scientific functionality, its undeniable beauty endures. An ostrich-feather plumed helmet rests between crossed flags and above a warrior’s shield, from which behind peek a drum and horn. The body is finished in brilliant gold gilt with laurel leaf flourishes and draped fabric imagery. The dial face has been hand-painted in beautiful detail. These antique barometers make impressive decorative, sculptural, objects, instantly elevating a room’s decor with a touch of old-world class.
